The rising high school senior will join an exceptionally talented group of tight ends.
Marshall Pritchett, a 2025 tight end, has committed to UNC. According to 247sports.com, he is ranked as the #36 TE in the class of 2025, while ESPN’s recruiting rankings place him 17th nationally at his position.
Over the past year, Pritchett also made unofficial visits to Alabama, Wisconsin, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida State, Tennessee, and Clemson. He received offers from several other schools, including Duke, but ultimately made a wise choice in committing to UNC.
People often ask about his star rating. Despite being a 3-star recruit, it’s important to remember that tight ends are typically rated differently compared to other skill positions. The last tight end to receive a 5-star rating was LSU’s Arik Gilbert in 2020. Notably, Travis Kelce was a 2-star recruit, George Kittle had a 3-star composite rating, and even Rob Gronkowski, considered by many to be the greatest of all time at the position, was a 4-star. The evolving game has made the tight end position crucial for any successful offense, a fact well understood by former NFL head coach and current UNC tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens.

Tar Heel football hasn’t seen a top-tier tight end since Eric Ebron, but Bryson Nesbit is approaching that level. There’s considerable excitement about Texas A&M transfer Jake Johnson, and John Copenhaver has shown potential as an all-around, possible NFL talent. Additionally, incoming freshman Timothy Lawson, another 3-star recruit from Fort Myers, Florida, is ranked 37th at his position by ESPN, adding further depth to an already strong group.
