Watch: Alex Verdugo explains why he was ready to fight Orioles

Alex Verdugo of the New York Yankees was seen on camera appearing to threaten the Baltimore Orioles after Aaron Judge was struck by a pitch during Tuesday’s game.

Verdugo was recorded on YES Network cameras waving toward an Orioles player after Judge and Gleyber Torres were both hit by pitches in a 4-2 victory. It was quite clear that Verdugo was saying “just me and you” to the anonymous Oriole before adding, “After I’m done with you, I’m gonna f— that guy up.”

Verdugo was asked about the conversation following the game. He stated he was addressing Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, a personal friend of his.

“Me and Mount are boys,” Verdugo explained to Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media. “I was busting him up a little.” I’m just toying with him. At the end of the day, we take what happened seriously. These are our guys, and (Judge) is clearly our captain. It’s a significant deal for us, therefore none of us are happy about it.

“At the same time, I do not think it was purposeful. It’s only a few of pitches that went away from their players. It’s one of those things that happens after you hit someone. But if you can’t get in (without hurting someone), don’t go in that day.”

That would definitely explain why Verdugo smirked after delivering his warning. It appears that he was never serious about taking on the Orioles.

Judge’s hit-by-pitch gave the Yankees a major scare. Fortunately, testing indicated no broken bones, so he should be alright.
