Mason Woods, an Iowa City West three-star athlete, is remaining at home.
Before his official visit to Iowa this weekend, Woods announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes, choosing them over Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri, among others.
Woods explored other programs through several visits, wanting to understand what each had to offer, but ultimately decided to stay close to home.
“Mason is an intriguing recruit because he has the potential to play on either side of the ball in college,” wrote Allen Trieu of 247Sports. “It appears he’ll start on offense, given his size, good route-running, and ability to track the ball. He can be utilized both outside and in the slot, and with his size and defensive background, he should be a good blocker. If offense doesn’t pan out, he’s fully capable on defense too. His versatility, physical attributes, connections to the program, and overall football background make him a strong addition.”
Woods is the son of Iowa’s special teams coordinator, LeVar Woods.
Although recruited by Iowa primarily as a tight end, Woods is also being brought in as an athlete, meaning he could play multiple positions on offense.
In his junior season, Woods recorded 35 receptions for 535 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, he tallied 17 tackles and two interceptions. While some programs viewed Woods as a defensive player, the Hawkeyes prefer him on offense.
Woods also excelled in track and field, running an 11.05-second 100-meter dash and a 22.83-second 200-meter dash. He was part of West High’s relay teams that competed at state and the Drake Relays.
According to 247Sports, Woods is ranked as the No. 46 athlete in the 2025 class and the No. 4 prospect in Iowa.
With Woods committed, Iowa now has eight scholarship commitments for the 2025 class. These include in-state commitments from Woods, Clear Lake four-star tight end Thomas Meyer, and Pleasant Valley three-star offensive lineman Joey VanWetzinga. Out-of-state commitments feature three-star quarterback Jimmy Sullivan, three-star tight end Eli Johnson, three-star defensive back Drew MacPherson, and three-star linebackers Burke Gautcher and Carson Cooney. Additionally, Iowa has a preferred walk-on commitment from three-star quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald.
