Spring football is over. The transfer portal is closed. The calendar reads June. Do you know what that means? College football is almost here. It’s been five months since Michigan defeated Washington in the national championship game in Houston, and we’ve made it through the toughest portion of the summer.
We’re well past halfway, and there’s nothing but excitement to get us to the finish line. We are fewer than three months away from the beginning of the collegiate football season, and Washington football is prepared. Huskies fans are excited to watch their squad on the field for the first time.
The 2024 college football season is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling in years due to several significant changes. One of the most notable is the expanded College Football Playoff.
This season marks the debut of the new 12-team playoff format, replacing the previous four-team system. The inclusion of eight additional teams will have a substantial impact.
Firstly, this expansion alleviates some pressure during the regular season for college football fans. Previously, an early-season loss could be devastating, with any subsequent loss likely ending playoff hopes. Now, power five teams with a 10-2 record should feel secure, and even some 9-3 teams might make the cut.
Additionally, the season will feature more football and extend longer. The College Football Playoff committee’s 2024 schedule reveals an exciting month of games, with 11 playoff games spread out over a month, rather than just three games in a week.
Another major change this year is the reconfiguration of conferences. The Pac-12 has dissolved, with all its teams except Oregon State and Washington State finding new homes. USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington have joined the Big Ten, Cal and Stanford have moved to the ACC, and Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah are now in the Big 12. Meanwhile, the Big 12 has lost Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC.
Overall, these changes are set to make for an exciting season. The landscape of college football will look different, and while not everyone may be pleased with the new changes, the increase in football games and competitive matchups is a definite positive.
Washington football is entering the Jedd Fisch era
The Washington football team is coming off one of its best seasons ever. This was the last season for the Huskies, along with nine other schools, in the Pac-12 conference, and it was a memorable farewell. Washington and Oregon stood out in the talented conference, facing each other in two thrilling games. The Huskies triumphed in both matchups, which propelled them to the national title game.
Despite their successful season, Washington fell short in the national title game against Michigan. The Wolverines took an early lead, scoring 14 points in the first quarter, and while the Huskies improved their defense, their offense struggled against Michigan’s top-ranked defense. Washington managed only 13 points, and Michigan secured a 34-13 victory.
The offseason has been challenging for Washington. The team is losing much of its key talent and has also lost its head coach. Nick Saban retired after the season, and Kalen DeBoer has taken over as head coach of Alabama. This turnover has left Washington’s recent progress in jeopardy.
However, there is a silver lining for Washington football. The Huskies made a strong hire in Jedd Fisch, who is now the new head coach. Fisch previously turned around Arizona’s football program and has had a productive offseason, bringing several players to Washington via the transfer portal, including some of his former Wildcats. While losing some players to the portal was inevitable, the spring window didn’t see significant damage. Nonetheless, the Huskies will need several players to step up next season to fill the gaps left by those who went pro. One player in particular is poised for a breakout season.
Denzel Boston, WR
The Washington football team will need a new star to emerge at wide receiver with Rome Odunze now in the NFL. Denzel Boston, who has played two seasons for the Huskies, might be the player to step up. So far, Boston has been relatively quiet, with just seven receptions for 66 yards and no touchdowns.
This season presents a great opportunity for Boston to have a breakout year. Despite the loss of Michael Penix Jr. to the NFL, the addition of Will Rogers from the transfer portal provides Washington with a solid quarterback. Additionally, Boston is expected to be on the field frequently as he has climbed up the depth chart and is poised to be a starter.
The conditions are favorable for Denzel Boston to have a standout season. Although many expect the Huskies to regress, they have a capable new head coach and the potential for another special WR-QB duo. Boston could be instrumental in exceeding those expectations.
