WHAT JAE’ON YOUNG SAYS ABOUT CAL
“The authenticity and realness at Cal is unmatched,” Young told 247Sports. “They made me feel like a priority from the very start, focusing on what they could do for me rather than what I could do for them. The coaches have developed many defensive backs who have advanced to the next level, and I aspire to join that elite group.
“What stood out to me was the passionate energy of the staff and everyone connected to the University of Cal. They are committed to investing in the players and doing everything possible to ensure their success. The life-after-football opportunities and connections at Cal are unique. If you want to make a 40-year decision, you go to Cal Berkeley.”
WHO ELSE WAS IN THE MIX?
Young had also scheduled official visits to Kansas and Boston College for later this month, with hometown USC actively pursuing him as well.
WHERE JAE’ON YOUNG RANKS AS A RECRUIT
An explosive and agile athlete, the 5-foot-11, 165-pound Young recorded multiple sub-11.0 100-meter times last spring, with a personal best of 10.77 seconds and a 21.87-second 200-meter dash. According to 247Sports rankings, he is the No. 14 athlete nationally and the No. 30 overall prospect in California for the 2025 class.
HOW JAE’ON YOUNG FITS WITH CAL
“Coach Justin Wilcox, coach Terrence Brown, and coach Tre Watson think very highly of me as a player,” Young said. “Both coach TB and coach Watson believe I can contribute early, playing both inside at nickel and outside at corner. They see my versatility as one of my greatest strengths. They focus on development and being a student of the game. They’ve developed many freshman All-Americans, and if you’re ready, you’ll play. I believe that’s their vision for me.”
WHAT WE THINK ABOUT JAE’ON YOUNG
Greg Biggins, a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, has been monitoring Young for several years and is optimistic about his potential impact at the next level, potentially as early as 2025.
“He’s explosive with the ball in his hands and had a productive season at receiver but projects best as a nickel corner in college,” Biggins wrote in his scouting report. “He’s a tough, scrappy player who competes bigger than his size and always has a chip on his shoulder. He has natural cover instincts, doesn’t panic, and has good ball skills.”
