The University of Southern California announced on X (previously Twitter) that All-American Luke Maurer will use his Covid fifth-year with the Trojans. Maurer, a freestyle specialist, will provide the Trojan men a major boost as they attempt to improve from their 22nd-place finish at the NCAAs this season.
It will be a family affair as Maurer’s mother, Lea Maurer, begins her third year as head of USC’s Swimming and Diving department.
Maurer has been a regular on Stanford’s relays since his freshman year. He holds the school records in the 400 free, 800 free, and 400 medley relays. Individually, he ranks second all-time for the Cardinals in the 200 freestyle (1:32.40), eighth in the 100 free (42.20), and ninth in the 50 free (19.28). He is a 14-time All-American.
The Trojan men finished 22nd at the NCAAs this season, swimming only one relay: the 400 medley. Maurer will be highly useful as a relay swimmer. His best timings in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free would all be among the top ten in program history, and he would have led USC’s 23-24 roster in the 100 and 200 freestyles.
USC placed fifth in the Pac-12 this season (Stanford finished second), but will join the Big Ten in the autumn.
Luke Maurer’s younger brother, Rex Maurer, is also in the transfer portal after finishing his freshman year at Stanford, but he has not publicly announced his next destination. R. Maurer did not compete in the solo finals at the NCAAs, but he did lead off Stanford’s seventh-place 200 medley relay, which earned All-American honors.
