Arizona State football signed another top quarterback. But once immediately becomes a Sun Devil, he’ll switch from tossing to catching.
Dyer, a three-star prospect according to 247Sports, is presently attending La Cueva High School in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was named the 2023 Gatorade New Mexico Player of the Year as a junior after throwing for 2,897 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, as well as rushing for 1,492 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Dyer led La Cueva finish 10-3 and win the New Mexico 6A state championship.
He is scheduled to graduate from high school in 2025.
Dyer had previously earned offers from Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Texas Tech, Utah, Utah State, and UTEP.
When it came time to make a selection, he chose ASU because he wanted to play wide receiver instead. Fortunately for Dyer, he will be guided by former Steelers wide out and freshly hired wide receivers coach Hines Ward.
In an interview with Jordan Hamm of Sports360AZ, Dyer praised Ward.
“The fact that Hines Ward is the receivers coach. “He’s a former Super Bowl MVP, two-time Super Bowl champion, and possibly an NFL Hall of Famer,” Dyer stated. “He’s done it at the position that they’re recruiting me as, he’s done it on a high level; at the highest level for a long time.”
While Dyer may find it difficult to change positions, Ward understands the adjustment he will face because he went through the same transition in high school.
“When I first talked to him, I didn’t know that he had played quarterback in high school,” Dyer stated.
“He told me how he made the switch and how he made the transition and played the receiver position, and that made me a little bit more comfortable.”
