Breaking: Indiana transfer lands commitment with rivals

Davion Chandler, a three-star Indiana wide receiver, committed to Illinois  following an official visit to the UI campus. The 6-foot, 170-pound Lawrence North wide receiver from Indianapolis (Ind.) is ranked No. 115 in the Class of 2025 by 247Sports and No. 10 in Indiana. Chandler is ranked as the country’s No. 1150 overall prospect by the Composite.

Chandler also received scholarship offers from Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue, Louisville, Kansas, Boston College, and West Virginia, among other FBS programs. He planned to make official visits to Wisconsin and Indiana later this month.

As a junior, Chandler had 40 receptions for 779 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Illinois wide receivers coach Justin Stepp spearheaded the Illini’s pursuit of Chandler, with assistance from offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr.

In-state wideout Davion Chandler recaps IU Junior Day visit

Chandler is the Illini’s sixth pledge in the Class of 2025, and the second wide receiver, following three-star Mount Zion (Ill.) wideout Brayden Trimble.

Why it matters: Chandler might be a game-changer for the Illinois recruiting class in Indiana. Chandler is only the second Hoosier State talent Illinois has signed during Bret Bielema’s tenure, and the first since three-star offensive lineman Hunter Whitenack in the Class of 2022, and he received offers from numerous Big Ten schools. Illinois has made a significant effort to recruit Indiana this cycle, hosting three-star edge rusher Tyrone Burrus Jr. and three-star defensive lineman Isaiah White for official visits this month.

“I have a great relationship with Coach Stepp, and relationships play a big part in my decisions,” Chandler stated earlier this month.

Chandler provides the Illinois receiving room additional speed, which it requires. While he has to build more strength, the 6-foot, 170-pound wideout has outstanding quickness to gain separation and the speed to get over the top and produce yards after the catch. Stepp wanted to add speed to the Illini’s bigger, more physical wide receiver corps, and Chandler delivers.
