Sad News: Texas Tech mourns another death

Texas Tech mourns the death of famous basketball player Jim Reed, who played for the Red Raiders from 1953 to 1956 and lived to reach 90. He was elected into Tech Basketball’s inaugural Ring of Honor class after finishing his career with 1,689 points and 1,333 rebounds.

Reed averaged a double-double in all four seasons at Tech, is the all-time program leader in total rebounds, was selected Texas Tech’s first Associated Press All-American, and was the Border Conference Player of the Year. He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and helped Texas Tech win Border Conference championships in 1954, 1955, and 1956. He is a member of the Texas Tech Hall of Fame.

Reed averaged 14.03 rebounds per game, ranking second in program history, with a career-high 16.28 as a junior for the Red Raiders. He holds the single-game record of 27 rebounds against Texas and Eastern New Mexico and has six games with 20 or more rebounds in his career. Reed, a 6-foot-4 forward, had a career-high 41 points in one game at Furman and averaged 22.3 points per game as a junior and 20.9 in his senior season. He averaged 17.8 points per game during his career, ranking 10th in program history for scoring after leading the team all four years.

He averaged 13.46 rebounds per game as a freshman in 1952-53, and 22.3 points and 16.28 rebounds per game as a junior.

Reed was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 1967 and chosen by the St. Louis Hawks in the 1956 NBA Draft.
