Syracuse now favorite to land commitment for another talented star

Cortez Harris, a 2025 four-star prospect from the talent-rich Washington, D.C., metropolitan region, was named to a top ten list that included Syracuse football in early May.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end is ranked in the top 300 nationally by several recruiting organizations, with top ten schools including Orange, Penn State, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, South Carolina, and Michigan.

Despite having an official top 10, Rivals.com national analyst Adam Friedman argues Harris’ “list of major contenders is shorter than that.”

According to Friedman, Harris will be making formal visits to Tennessee, Maryland, and Penn State in June. According to the Rivals.com national analyst, “Florida, Syracuse, and Michigan are all plausible options for official visits. Harris is considering committing on or around July 1, although that date is flexible.

Syracuse football is a top contender for 2025 four-star edge Cortez Harris.

Needless to say, if the Orange hopes to win Harris’ recruitment, SU coaches will want to get him to the Hill for an official visit before he makes his decision.

According to his X profile, he received a scholarship offer from the Syracuse football staff in December of 2022, while former head coach Dino Babers was still in charge of the program. Harris is a rising senior at Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Almost every major recruiting website in his class ranks Harris as a top-25 edge and a top-10 player coming out of Maryland. Harris’s current greatest national ranking comes from On3, which places him at No. 199 overall.

At the time of writing, both the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking ranked him in the top 265 countrywide for the 2025 cycle.

To date, I haven’t seen any analyst projections for Harris during his recruiting process. On3’s recruitment prediction algorithm presently ranks Penn State first, followed by Maryland and Tennessee.

At this point, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown and his top-tier staff have secured at least 19 verbal commitments from their highly regarded 2025 class. On Monday, Syracuse’s football cycle was ranked 11th by the 247Sports Composite and 7th by Rivals.com.

Among the Orange’s 2025 commits is four-star edge Sharlandiin Strange, who verbally committed to Syracuse in late January over other finalists Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Southern California. Strange, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 245 pounds, attends Cheltenham High School in Wyncote, Pennsylvania.

From June 14 to June 16, 2025, four-star rating CJ May intends to officially visit Syracuse football. May, a 6-foot-4, 225-pounder from Highland Home High School in Highland Home, Alabama, was a former verbal commit to Notre Dame.

According to 247Sports, May is ranked as high as 145 in the country among rising high school seniors.
