The Green Bay Packers may be focused on preparing for the 2024 NFL season, but there is another important scenario unfolding behind the scenes. Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ front office are discussing a possible long-term contract deal for young quarterback Jordan Love.
The most pressing question is whether the extension will be granted before the 2024 season. And, if it doesn’t, will Love opt to wait till an extension is granted?
Needless to say, the Packers need to make some decisions. Love began the 2023 season in cruel fashion, with some media members urging Green Bay to sideline him.
However, he finished the season on a run, establishing himself as one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks.
Now, the Green Bay Packers must decide whether they’ve seen enough to conclude that Love is their long-term solution. One season is not a large sample size.
ESPN Analyst Reveals Take On Green Bay Packers, Jordan Love Extension Talks
With the big question hanging in the air, ESPN NFL analyst Booger McFarland spoke up on it. He believes the Packers should go ahead and negotiate a new contract with Love.
“I think it’s time to go ahead and reward this young man with a long-term contract.”
During the 2023 season with the Green Bay Packers, Love completed 64.2% of his completion attempts for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also accumulated 247 yards and four additional touchdowns on the rush.
Those stats provide compelling evidence that Love is a potential, if not current, superstar. However, as previously said, one season represents a very tiny sample size.
Take a look at the New York Giants’ position with Daniel Jones, who committed long-term after one successful season. They’re in serious difficulty because of their decision.
The Green Bay Packers can’t afford to overpay too early. Love is apparently asking for a contract worth approximately $50 million per year. That is a large sum of money to commit to a quarterback who has just started one NFL season.
Waiting may only make matters worse and increase Love’s price tag even more. It might potentially jeopardize the Packers’ relationship with their young quarterback.
The two sides are likely to reach an agreement before the 2024 season begins. The Green Bay Packers feel they have discovered their franchise quarterback, but they want to make sure before they make a decision. Nobody can blame them for that.
