Breaking: Charlton Athletic midfielder now set to leave club

Charlton Athletic youngster Jason Adigun is attracting interest from a number of clubs when his contract expires.

Charlton Athletic have yet to publicly disclose the destiny of its academy hopefuls, but choices will be made at The Valley on which children will stay and who will leave.

The Addicks have seen a slew of elite prospects come through their ranks over the years, and there are no doubt plenty more fascinating players waiting to make their debut in South London.

While some players progress directly from the academy to the first squad, others gain experience on loan before making the move to the EFL.

Among them is 20-year-old midfielder Jason Adigun, who appears to have captured the attention of those around him.

According to All Nigeria Soccer, the Charlton Athletic star has sparked attention from Gillingham, Cheltenham Town, Harrogate Town, and Southend United following a good campaign in the National League South with Welling United.

According to the source, Adigun will leave The Valley on a free transfer in order to pursue more first-team opportunities outside of the Addicks. That, coupled with a return of two goals and eight assists in 16 outings for Welling, has earned admiration.

A loss for the Addicks?

Adigun has not yet made his senior debut for Charlton Athletic, but after impressing on his maiden senior loan in the second half of the season, seeing him leave may be difficult.

They may have hoped that he would return and kick on at The Valley after a productive pre-season, but it appears that his immediate future is elsewhere from the club.

Charlton Athletic and other League Two clubs are interested in the 20-year-old ahead of his departure.
Rest assured, there are likely many other prospects ready and waiting for a shot, and Adigun’s departure may well open the door for them to gain the attention if he moves on.

Seeing him prosper with another EFL club might mean his departure comes back to hurt the Addicks. Ultimately, the academy’s goal is to provide youngsters with a pathway into the senior game and prepare them for successful careers regardless of whether they play for Charlton.

A busy summer awaits

Charlton Athletic will have a vital summer as Nathan Jones leads his first transfer window.

They have made signings under his watch through free transfer movements, but the coming months will provide him a true opportunity to construct the group to his taste. This will most likely result in a large number of players being replaced by newcomers.

A number of first-team players are already leaving at the conclusion of their contracts, so Jones and his teammates are in for a busy few months as they prepare for the 2024/25 season.
