After the Bills fell to the Chiefs in January to conclude their postseason, veteran safety told reporters he wasn’t sure about his future in Buffalo.
Hyde, 33, became an unrestricted free agent in March and will remain so through the middle of May. Hyde had been thinking about retiring after suffering neck issues in recent years. According to Jon Scott of WGRZ, Hyde stated on Thursday that he will either play for the Bills in 2024 or retire, as he is not interested in playing for another team.
Hyde also stated that he is in no rush to make a decision.
“I feel like I have been an open book. “You guys know everything I know,” Hyde told Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News. “I left after the season and moved to San Diego. My days are spent working out, swimming with the kids, and trying to continue to support my wife with the kids while both physically and emotionally preparing myself in case something happens.
“I honestly don’t know. You all know how awful it was with my neck and the stingers. So I just said, “Let me get away from it for a little bit.” And if the time comes and the juices flow again, we’ll give it a shot. But there’s no rush on my end.”
Hyde also stated that he has had open communication with General Manager Brandon Beane and Head Coach Sean McDermott regarding his predicament.
“Just got done talking to them and we’re all on the same page,” said Hyde. “I’m 33 years old, guy. I want to live a healthy life, and my family is the most important to me. At the same time, I’d like to win the Super Bowl; that would be really fantastic. So, let’s see. “We will take it day by day.”
Hyde signed with the Bills in 2017, after spending his first four seasons with the Packers, where he was drafted in the fifth round in 2013. He has started 128 of 158 games in his career, defending 66 passes, intercepting 24 passes, forcing five turnovers, and accumulating 5.0 sacks. In 2023, he started 14 games for Buffalo and recorded seven passes defensed and two interceptions. He also started both of his team’s playoff games.
