The Blue Devils appear to be adding depth to their backcourt.
All indications were that the Duke basketball team would not be adding any more impact players to its roster for the upcoming season, but Jon Scheyer still has two scholarships remaining, one of which appears to be ready for use.
The Blue Devils received a 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction for Rice transfer Cameron Sheffield on Wednesday, less than a week after signing Tulane transfer Sion James.
Sheffield, a 6-foot-6 guard, did not play this season due to a foot injury. He still has two years of eligibility left owing to a redshirt and COVID season.
During his last stint on the court, the Georgia native started 34 of 35 games and averaged 7.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game on 43.0% shooting from the field and 37.3% from three.
He has similarities with the other members of Duke’s transfer class — Syracuse center Maliq Brown, Purdue’s Mason Gillis, and James — in that he can defend at a high level, is not scared of contact, and is a good shooter.
Cameron Sheffield’s recruiting has been fairly quiet since he first entered the transfer site in late March. St. Louis is the only other school that has expressed an interest in him, with a visit in late April.
Sheffield’s role in the Blue Devil rotation next season is unclear, considering his time away from the court due to injury, as well as Duke’s deep and skilled backcourt, highlighted by returners Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster.
He was not ranked by 247Sports in its transfer rankings, but Duke now has the country’s No. 19 transfer class, according to the recruiting service, in addition to the top-ranked freshmen class.
Cameron Sheffield has not provided a schedule for his decision.
