Charlton Athletic could sign ‘incredible’ striker for free, another deal confirmed

The prolific League One scorer was involved in a transfer drama in January.
Jonson Clarke-Harris, a former Charlton Athletic transfer target, has been released by Peterborough United, exactly four months after the Addicks and Bristol Rovers’ memorable January transfer catastrophe.

The 29-year-old, who has a remarkable 107 League One goals, topped the scoring rankings twice in three years, from 2021 to 2023. He made 190 appearances for the Posh, but is said to be looking for a fresh challenge this season.

Clarke-Harris scored 13 times this season as Peterborough’s promotion ambitions were dashed in the play-off semi-finals. The striker was transfer-listed a year ago, but despite interest and many bids, the move never materialized.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson lauded Clarke-Harris, calling him a ‘great signing’ who ‘will never be forgotten for what he did’ for the club. He added: “Of course, at the start of this season, we thought he’d leave twice, especially in the first window, but he stayed, and by then I’d decided I wanted to go in a different direction.” I wish him all the best; I am confident he will get a decent job and deserves it.”

Jonson Clarke-Harris was offered a contract by Charlton in January.

Clarke-Harris was on the verge of joining Bristol Rovers last summer, but the deal fell through at the final minute despite a club record fee being agreed for the Gas. Charlton Athletic, Gillingham, Wrexham A.F.C., and Fleetwood Town were all connected with a move during the summer.

Peterborough reportedly rejected the London club’s initial £450,000 deal before accepting a £500,00 offer. Contract negotiations ensued, although Clarke-Harris was believed to have rejected two separate offers from The Valley in preference of leaving Posh when his contract expired.

Barry Fry, Director of Football, told the Peterborough Telegraph that Johnno had turned down two contract offers from Charlton. It is up to him, of course, but he will not receive a better offer or a better club, in my opinion.

“He may assume he will be financially better off if he leaves for free in the summer, but teams are struggling financially and with financial fair play regulations. Two Premier League clubs were charged yesterday, and I know of a half-dozen Championship clubs that are battling to follow the rules. “The money is no longer there.”

The 20-year-old winger was set to become a free agent at the end of June, but the Addicks would still be owed compensation due to his age.

However, Campbell has signed a two-year contract extension with an additional 12-month club option.

The academy product, who joined the League One club when he was nine, appeared in 40 games in all competitions last season.

“I’ve enjoyed working under Nathan Jones,” Campbell stated on Charlton’s official website. “He expects a lot of us as players, and he knows how to get the most out of us. I’ve learned a lot.

“I’m already looking forward to next season.” The entire team is upbeat; we all have the same aim, and maybe we can achieve it.”
Charlton manager Jones said: “I’m thrilled Tyreece has signed a new deal with the club. He’s an excellent young player with speed, skill, and great one-on-one abilities.

“He’s been with the club for a number of years, progressing through the academy and emerging as one of our game changers near the conclusion of the season.

“I’m pleased I’ll be able to continue working with him and continuing to watch and support his development, as he has plenty of potential.”
