Virginia Tech and Mike Young secured another commitment for a talented star
He’s the Hokies’ fifth transfer portal pledge this offseason, following Temple guard Hysier Miller, Cal guard Rodney Brown Jr., Charleston forward Ben Burnham, and VCU forward Toibu Lawal. Schutt is the eighth overall acquisition, joining three high school standouts in guard Ben Hammond and forwards Ryan Jones Jr. and Tyler Johnson.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound redshirt sophomore played two seasons for the Blue Devils. He appeared in 14 games as a freshman in 2022-23, averaging 2.1 points and making seven of his twenty three-point attempts. He redshirted and underwent surgery on his left knee after appearing in an exhibition against UNC Pembroke on November 1, 2023, before the start of his sophomore year and going 2-of-5 from deep in 12 minutes.
Schutt, a native of Yorkville, Illinois, was a four-star and top-75 talent in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. His offers at Yorkville Christian High School included Creighton, DePaul, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Marquette, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Xavier, among others.
A few of those schools, including Butler, Dayton, Georgia, Oregon, and Notre Dame, expressed interest after he entered the transfer portal on April 15.
As a senior, the 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois averaged 24.6 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 52% from the field and 39% from three. He also guided the Mustangs to a state title.

When Schutt signed his letter of intent in November 2021, Duke coach Jon Scheyer referred to him as “a premier shooter” with “championship pedigree”. He should fit in well with Young’s style in Blacksburg, which is highly reliant on 3-pointers.
With the arrival of Schutt, Virginia Tech now has 12 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season, leaving one spot vacant.
