The club made the decision to dismiss the manager after a poor run of results, this has not come as a surprise at all.
Thursday morning, a few days after falling 4-1 in the first round to the Denver Nuggets, the organization revealed on social media.
This might have a significant impact on the Suns and their upcoming choice to keep or fire first-year coach Frank Vogel, as there will be limited alternatives for replacements that the Lakers could obtain instead of Phoenix.
Suns owner Mat Ishbia stated in his farewell interview on Wednesday that “not one discussion, let alone a decision, has been had” regarding Vogel and that he would be meeting with the team this week.
Shams Charania of The Athletic has provided a list of probable Lakers coaching candidates.
“Sources briefed on the matter say that an extensive search will commence soon, with candidates such as Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, JJ Redick and, if he becomes available, Ty Lue among others.”
Lue and the Los Angeles Clippers are currently trailing 3-2 in their first-round series with the Dallas Mavericks.
Lue was reported to be one of the Suns’ top coaching prospects last offseason before the franchise hired Vogel, and Lue remained with the Clippers.
Ironically, Vogel was the Lakers’ last coach before Ham, and the team fired him soon after the 2022 season ended.
During Ham’s two-year stint, the Lakers went 90-74 in the regular season and were swept in the Western Conference Finals by the Nuggets last season before losing in the first round this year.
