Just as the transfer portal gives and takes, the coaching carousel may do the same. Shortly after Duke Football’s coaching change in December, their old coach secured a commitment from former Youngstown State linebacker Alex Howard through the transfer portal. Four months later, Howard hit the portal again and has committed to playing for Manny Diaz, the Blue Devils’ new head coach.
Howard, who stands 6’2″ and weighs 230 pounds, was the most highly evaluated defender at his school in 2023 and played well for Youngstown State across three years. In 13 games this season, he has 76 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception, and three passes defensed. It helped him earn All-Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention status.
Howard first accessed the portal on December 4 before obtaining several Division I scholarship offers. He reported receiving offers from A&M, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Colorado, South Carolina, Kansas, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, UCF, and Liberty. His second transfer began with a portal entry on April 15th and concluded on May 1st, when he confirmed his commitment to the Blue Devils.
