Insider Hints at Yankees Losing Superstar to Crosstown Rival Mets

An MLB insider warned that the New York Yankees could lose their young star to the New York Mets.

The New York Yankees’ blockbuster deal for Juan Soto this offseason marked the start of what many fans think will be a decade-plus relationship between the two organizations.

Soto, arguably baseball’s finest hitter, will become a free agent this winter. Given his production and age, the Scott Boras client will very definitely fetch a large contract.

The Yankees’ top priority is to re-sign Soto in the offseason or extend his contract throughout the season. No matter the cost, New York must do all it takes to keep him around.

If they don’t, Steve Cohen of the New York Mets in Queens is likely to make an offer to Boras and Soto that they can’t refuse. Cohen did not go all out this summer, but the expectation is that he will do as he has in previous years and spend as much money on players as anybody else in baseball.

On an edition of “Fair Territory,” Ken Rosenthal speculated that the Mets may sign Soto while keeping Pete Alonso. This offseason, Alonso will also become a free agent.

“You ask, ‘So, do you use [Alonso] instead of Soto? If you’re [Mets owner] Steve Cohen, you could definitely do both.”

It is unclear what New York will do with Alonso, but that choice could have an impact on Cohen’s plans for the Bronx star. If the Mets do not re-sign Alonso, he will have more money to invest on a prospective deal with Soto.

New York has discovered how talented the 25-year-old slugger truly is. He is now cutting. In 114 at-bats, he hit 316/.429/.553, including seven home runs. While the Yankees’ offense has sputtered at times, the Dominican native has not been the problem.

It will be fascinating to see everything evolve throughout the offseason, as both New York teams may engage in a bidding battle for one of baseball’s finest players.
