Breaking: Four-star center expresses excitement as he lands with Georgia

Following Russel Tchewa’s departure, the Georgia Bulldogs began looking for a standout center this offseason. On Monday night, the Bulldogs finally found their future center.

Four-star center Somto Cyril has committed to the Bulldogs, but he will also enter the 2024 NBA Draft. The former Kentucky signee chose the Bulldogs over the Wildcats, Georgia Tech, and Arkansas.

“On my visit to Athens, Coach White and his staff were very detailed in their approach, and it was a great feeling being in a place that had such a family environment,” Cyril said in a social media post. “To be quite honest, I plan to enter the 2024 NBA Draft while still attending college. Throughout the month of May, I will take use of this opportunity to solicit feedback from NBA teams. This will provide information not just to me and my family, but also to my coaching staff as we prepare for the 2024-25 season.

“I am excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to get to work representing the University of Georgia!”

Cyril, who stands 6-foot-10 and weighs 240 pounds, is Georgia’s seventh acquisition this offseason and the second from high school. He joins five-star forward Asa Newell, Mount St. Mary’s guards De’Shayne Montgomery and Dakota Leffew, and Appalachian State forward Justin Abson.

Cyril is headed to Athens after reopening his recruitment following Wildcats head coach John Calipari’s leaving for Arkansas. Last June, he became Kentucky’s first commit in the 2024 class.

Cyril is ranked as the tenth-best center prospect in the 2024 cycle by 247Sports. He is also ranked as the fifth-best player in Georgia and the 46th-best player overall.

Cyril visited Georgia on April 21 and Georgia Tech on April 25. Despite his relationship to Calipari, he did not visit Arkansas before making his decision.

Cyril, who is originally from Nigeria, spent his last two years of high school playing for Atlanta’s Overtime Elite. He missed a significant amount of his senior season due to a hand injury. Overtime Elite’s web stats show that he averaged 9.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game in 2023-24.
