Kansas City Chiefs trade drops 1,700-yard RB next to Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs’ inconsistent backfield was overlooked by Patrick Mahomes’ poor wide receiver play during the franchise’s 2023 Super Bowl run, but GM Brett Veach may consider adding an explosive running back alongside the All-Pro MVP during the NFL Draft.

While Isaiah Pacheco showed flashes last season, rushing for 935 yards and seven touchdowns, the second-year former seventh-round pick averaged 4.6 yards per carry, and the Chiefs appear to be most productive when using a running back by committee system.

However, given that this is a poor running back class with only one or two standout backs, Veach may consider trading for a veteran.

Trading for Chicago Bears RB Khalil Herbert Makes Sense for Kansas City Chiefs

Khalil Herbert, a Chicago Bears running back, could be a name to watch on the trade market during this week’s draft, and the Chiefs are an excellent fit.

Herbert is now expendable in Chicago, thanks to the entrance of free agent acquisition D’Andre Swift, while rookie Roschon Johnson has made an impact.

Bears RB Khalil Herbert Could Be Fantasy Sleeper in 2022

Trading for Herbert, who has run for 1,775 yards and eight touchdowns in his first 42 games, would be the type of cap-savvy move Veach and the Chiefs have become accustomed to in recent seasons, given that the former sixth-round pick is still on his rookie contract.

Herbert has only averaged 8.6 rushing attempts per game, so he has minimal miles on his tires and might thrive in Andy Reid’s offense, especially with the amount of explosive playmaking potential surrounding him in the Chiefs’ passing game, which should generate opportunities for him to break off big runs.

If the Bears call the Chiefs and offer Herbert in exchange for a fifth-round pick, the economics and on-field potential of the deal may be too appealing for Veach and Kansas City to turn down.
