Breaking news: Milan’s top manager target has now agreed deal

According to Mundo Deportivo, Xavi has changed his mind and will remain at Barcelona next season, causing a ripple effect for Milan and Roberto De Zerbi.

The coach had declared early this season that he would be leaving as soon as the campaign ended, but has subsequently put together a streak of good results and performances.

A crisis conference was held this evening at President Joan Laporta’s residence, and Mundo Deportivo claims that it was successful in persuading Xavi to stay at Camp Nou for the 2024-25 season.

Xavi was one of several contenders mentioned in the running for the Milan post, as Stefano Pioli is set to be fired this summer.

It also implies that Barcelona is no longer looking for a new coach, as Brighton & Hove Albion’s Italian strategist De Zerbi had been linked with the post to replace Xavi.

There had been some apprehension about Xavi leaving Barcelona, where he had spent the majority of his playing career.

Recent reports have introduced several names as potential candidates for the next AC Milan manager, with one individual quickly rising as a favorite, being described as now leading the race for the position.

Uncertainty surrounds Milan’s future, notably marked by the absence of Stefano Pioli as the team’s leader. Pioli’s departure has been looming for months, particularly evident after a series of significant defeats, signaling the inevitable change.

The recent defeats to AS Roma and Inter Milan have emphasized the urgent need for a fresh perspective and innovative leadership. Consequently, the management is compelled to take action.

The management will thoroughly assess all viable candidates, including Mark van Bommel, who has garnered support from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Although Ibrahimovic backs van Bommel, other staff members will also evaluate his candidacy.

According to SportMediaset (via MilanNews), van Bommel has emerged as the frontrunner for the job, surpassing previous favorite Antonio Conte due to concerns over financial implications. Van Bommel’s coaching style aligns closely with Pioli’s, suggesting a seamless transition without the need for a drastic overhaul. Additionally, his appointment would prioritize implementing new strategies and subsequently investing in the squad, offering a refreshing approach to Milan’s future.
