Football Insider has learned that Celtic, Southampton, and PSV Eindhoven are all interested in signing Austrian goalkeeper Patrick Pentz.
Pentz is presently on loan with Danish club Brondby from recently crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
The 27-year-old has impressed for the Superliga club after being brought in to replace Mads Hermansen, who moved to Leicester City for a large fee last summer.
The Austrian international has done an excellent job of filling the vacuum left by the Dane, keeping nine clean sheets in 24 games this season.
The shot-stopper’s contract with Leverkusen is slated to end in June 2025, and his pursuers are expecting to score a bargain deal for him when the transfer window reopens.
Celtic are seeking for a new goalkeeper as Joe Hart prepares to retire at the end of the season, and Pentz’s proficiency with the ball fits the profile Brendan Rodgers is looking for between the posts.
Southampton are also looking for a new number one, with Gavin Bazunu sidelined until 2025 after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the warm-up before the Saints’ 3-0 win against Preston North End on April 16.
Celtic could move to sign Patrick Pentz as Joe Hart replacement
Pentz could show to be a viable alternative for any interested parties after assisting Brondby in their bid for the Danish championship this season.
Rodgers will be eager to resolve his goalkeeping position as soon as possible after knowing that Hart will be retiring in a few weeks.
Southampton is also in serious need of a new goalkeeper after Bazunu’s injury ended their promotion chances.
Pentz has yet to make a single game for Leverkusen since signing from Stade Reims in January 2023.
The German side may be tempted to cash in on the Austrian before his contract expires at the end of next season, with many clubs planning a move for him this summer.
In other news, Celtic player ratings versus Aberdeen: 8/10 O’Riley dazzles, 2/10 is terrible.
