Just in- Southampton confirm deal for Incredible 21-year-old

SAINTS defender Nico Lawrence has signed a new contract that will keep him with the club until 2026.

The 21-year-old has been at the club for more than two years, having joined from non-league side Glebe FC in February 2022.

He has progressed through the ranks to become a crucial member of the under-21s team, and he was named to the senior squad this month.

He trains with the first team on a regular basis at the request of manager Russell Martin and impresses him.

Lawrence spent the first half of the season on loan at Colchester United, where he struggled with injuries until January.

Lawrence stated that accepting his new contract was an easy decision. To think that two years ago I was playing step five football; now that I’m here, my game has only progressed, and I can’t wait to see what the next two years bring.”

Andy Goldie, academy director, added: “Nico has really pleased me since returning from Colchester, earning and grabbing the opportunities that have been provided to him.

“He’s shown remarkable maturity in how he approaches his growth both on and off the pitch, as evidenced by his performances for the under-21s and first-team training.

“He’s had a taste of first-team football at Colchester and recently was on the bench against Blackburn Rovers.

“His new contract now gives him the time to continue his development with us and earn future opportunities.”
