Two LSU football players have entered the transfer portal, placing the Tigers at the NCAA scholarship limit of 85.
The LSU Tigers have received their fourth transfer of the Spring Portal, this time from tight end Connor Gilbreath.
The Juco transfer appeared in 13 games in 2023, largely as a short yardage blocking tight end, totaling 56 snaps.
The move is not surprising, as Gilbreath will most likely look for a school that would provide him with consistent playing time, since Mason Taylor, Mac Markway, and Ka’Morreun Pimpton will receive the majority of the playing time at tight end.
Following the departures, LSU Football now has 85 scholarship players after entering the Spring Transfer window with 88. When Brian Kelly and the coaching staff add defensive line depth, they will need to replace one guy for every new player they bring in.
The Tigers also lost walk-on defensive back Ryan Robinson Jr., who also put his name in the transfer portal. Robinson, a three-star recruit from New Orleans, chose to walk onto LSU rather than accept a scholarship elsewhere. He appeared in four games, largely on special teams, and the Tigers recorded three tackles.
LSU Football is keeping the key pieces in place
Early in the Spring Transfer portal period, the LSU Tigers retained everyone who is projected to play a part in 2024. Many expected to see a lot of movement in this transfer window, which is troubling for a program like LSU with high-quality depth players.
The Tigers will now attempt to add to their College Football Playoff-caliber squad, beginning with the defensive line. The Tigers have already offered a scholarship to Kent State defensive tackle CJ West, and the team will most likely continue to do so when things settle. As for departures, we may expect a few more in-depth pieces to enter the site, but nothing major.
