Miami Dolphins now make contract decision for star

Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback, has been the subject of much speculation this summer over a potential contract extension.

The Pro Bowl signal caller is about to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie deal. Tua will earn $23.17 million next season, barring an extension.

In an interview with NFL Media on Tuesday, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier stated that extension talks with Miami’s brass are “ongoing”.

This shouldn’t be too surprising. Typically, teams try to extend franchise quarterbacks when they enter the final year of their rookie contracts. Despite some doubts regarding his ability to lead the Dolphins, Tua has demonstrated that he can be the guy behind center.

While Tua has been the topic of South Beach this offseason, the Dolphins are also attempting to extend some of their core players.

Miami Dolphins looking to extend Jayden Waddle ahead of 2024 season

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Miami is attempting to sign the top receiver to a lucrative long-term contract before the 2024 season.

“The Dolphins are expected to try to sign wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to a contract extension, and the potential price of that extension came more into focus Monday when Philadelphia gave receiver DeVonta Smith a three-year, $75 million extension that includes $51 million guaranteed.”

Report on a possible Jaylen Waddle contract extension with the Miami Dolphins.

Waddle, a top-six pick from Alabama in the 2021 NFL Draft, is eligible for a contract extension for the first time in his career.

In recent months, wide receiver contracts have become a hot topic in the NFL. That’s especially true after the aforementioned Smith signed a hefty long-term contract with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week.

Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Ja’Marr Chase, and Brandon Aiyuk are also expected to get lucrative contracts this summer.

Waddle, 25, has a three-year career average of 84 receptions for 1,128 yards and six touchdowns. He’s linked up with Tyreek Hill to make one of the top receiver combinations in the NFL.
