A manager connected with Sunderland this season has now been confirmed as Aberdeen’s next manager.
Aberdeen recently made news for hiring Neil Warnock as their new manager and then firing him after only eight games.
The English Football League veteran had a dismal spell and is presently without a club.
And, while he was originally considered for the Sunderland post, the club is now seeking for someone considerably younger.
The Black Cats are still associated with Reims manager Will Still, who is 31 years old, less than half Warnock’s age.
Sunderland also admires Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, who is the EFL’s youngest manager at 34.
Who has been linked with Sunderland this season
This season, numerous names have been associated with the Sunderland manager position.
Of course, there have been two managerial changes at the Stadium of Light this season: Tony Mowbray in December and Michael Beale in February.
Beale left Sunderland with the second-shortest tenure of any prior manager, having lasted only 12 games.
Names such as Marek Papszun from Poland have been mentioned alongside Sunderland.
The Black Cats have been linked to a few obscure European coaches who have had excellent results in their respective countries.
Another is Jimmy Thelin.
Jimmy Thelin set to leave IF Elfsborg
Thelin, 46, is the manager of Swedish club IF Elfsborg.
He has managed there since 2018 and has overseen 213 games, winning 100 of them.
He’s achieved consistent league finishes in Sweden’s top division while playing attractive football with a young bunch of players.
Sunderland sacked Mowbray earlier this season, and Thelin was instantly linked.
And, after passing up a prospective move to Wearside, Thelin has now accepted the Aberdeen post; the Scottish club announced the news on X on Tuesday afternoon.
Thelin will take command in the summer.
Why Jimmy Thelin may never have been in the running for Sunderland
Sunderland has established a pattern with its recent management appointments.
Under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, all of Lee Johnson, Alex Neil, Mowbray, and Beale were unemployed when they accepted the Sunderland job.
Fans are beginning to expect another similar appointment, with former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom emerging as a major possibility at the moment.
Kristjaan Speakman earlier stated that Sunderland may pay a compensation fee for someone like Still or Rohl, but seemed to imply that the club’s choice would be an available coach.
So, while Thelin may have a great CV and a new challenge in the summer, he may never have been a serious contender for the Sunderland management position.
