Former Leicester City assistant reveals what Enzo Maresca must do in the run-in

A former Leicester City assistant has highlighted what Enzo Maresca needs to do in the automatic promotion race.

Maresca’s team has been on a bad run recently, and they need to get back on track quickly or their chances of automatic promotion will be jeopardised.

Leicester will be anxious to get back on track against West Bromwich Albion this weekend after losing 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle on Friday evening.

A win may propel them back to the top of the Championship table, as league leaders Ipswich Town face a difficult encounter away to Hull City.

Michael Appleton, who served as Leicester’s assistant manager under Craig Shakespeare and Claude Puel, has instructed Maresca what he needs to achieve in the run-in.

Appleton, speaking on talkSPORT’s EFL All Access podcast, advised Maresca ahead of the automatic promotion campaign.

“I think you’ve got to strip it back now,” the 48-year-old explained.

“It’s basically down to three games, and you can see the finish line, whereas at the start of the season, you could sit down in front of a group of guys and say, ‘Look lads, we’re going to get promoted this year, this is what it looks like’.

“It’s about 46 games, eight or nine months away. Sometimes it might be quite challenging.”

Appleton went on to say, “But if you can break it down into small groups of games throughout the season, it’s much simpler to regulate and control your emotions and whether you do well or not over that time of games.

“So I think he’ll try and sort of strip it back and probably get two or through or the senior players on board a little bit and use their experience to tap into some of the talented players in the group and just try and get them to not overcomplicate things.”

The former Charlton Athletic manager also stated that the fans play a crucial part in the final three home games at King Power Stadium.

“And I think obviously in the home games, clearly the fans will play their part in trying to get them over the line.”

The mission is clear for Leicester City

Leicester’s path to re-entry into the Premier League is straightforward. Three victories from four will be enough to mathematically guarantee a top-two finish.

If City want to avoid a nerve-racking final day game against Blackburn Rovers, they must focus on stringing together a three-game winning streak, beginning with West Brom.

Despite a terrible run of results, their destiny remains entirely in their own hands, therefore they must remain optimistic as the football team enters a critical few weeks.
