Sunderland are expected to get funding from Sky Sports and the EFL this season.
Sunderland and its Championship rivals will receive a seven-figure cash boost from the EFL this season, as well as a substantial sum from broadcaster Sky Sports.
Though the EFL cannot match the Premier division’s hefty prize money, clubs still gain from playing in the United Kingdom’s second-best division. All Championship clubs receive “Solidarity Payments” and “Basic Award Payments” for competing in the division, and the fee remains the same regardless of where they finish in the league.
The EFL’s Solidarity Payments to Championship clubs total £5,190,000 plus the £3,210,000 Basic Award Payment. The two payments total a cool £8,400,000. Only EFL clubs that are not eligible for Premier League Parachute Payments receive Solidarity Payments, which means that some Championship teams, such as Leeds United, Southampton, and Leicester City, will receive more than Sunderland.
According to the EFL, Solidarity Payments are determined as a percentage of the third-year Parachute Payment amount received by a Premier League demoted club, and are thus influenced by the value of Premier League broadcasting rights. Sunderland has also received a facility fee every time one of their matches is picked for broadcast by the EFL’s partner Sky Sports, which pays £75,000 to both home and away teams for any fixture chosen for television.
Sunderland had ten home games at the Stadium of Light televised by Sky Sports this season, including matches against Ipswich, Southampton, Watford, Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, West Brom, Leeds United, Preston North End, Hull City, and Leicester City.
This season, five of Sunderland’s away games against Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Leeds United, and Leicester City have been picked for television coverage. This means the Black Cats will receive a total of £1,125,000 from Sky Sports for the 15 games shown this season.
Sunderland already has a total approaching eight figures, with £9,525,000 in broadcast money coming from the EFL and Sky Sports for the 2023-24 season, in addition to the Solidarity Payment and Basic Award Payment. Cash from broadcasted games is processed and paid shortly after the selected fixture takes place.
