Two controversial decisions go against Milan during defeat to Roma

Roma won the opening leg of the Europa League quarter-final tie, but AC Milan can feel cheated given the judgments made against them.

Of course, the performance was poor, and a failure to defend a set piece allowed Gianluca Mancini to score the game’s sole goal, but two contentious calls eventually decided the outcome.

First, Romelu Lukaku appeared to be offside throughout the buildup to the goal. Sky replays after the game produced inconclusive lines, but because there was no VAR review, the evidence ends there.

Abraham’s HandBall

The Rossoneri then requested for a penalty kick late in the second half when English striker Abraham looked to touch the ball with his hand following a corner kick. VAR looked at that one and said it was fine, but the photographs are very damning.
It’s possible that the VAR chief thought Abraham was tucking his arm in, but at the instant of contact with the ball, his arm is clearly outstretched. After the game, Matteo Gabbia stated unequivocally that it should have been a penalty kick.
