The Blue Devils are returning their starting point guard for next season.
Sometimes the best addition to your roster is keeping one of your players, which is precisely what the Duke basketball team is doing at point guard.
Tyrese Proctor will return to the Blue Devils for his junior season, according to several reports.
The news was supposed to be public later this week, but it was leaked on Thursday afternoon.
It offers Jon Scheyer a point guard for next season, which was in doubt given that Jeremy Roach and Proctor both had decisions to make about their careers. Roach, who has one year of eligibility remaining, has yet to announce his plans.
When Tyrese Proctor announced that he will return to Duke following his freshman season, many expected him to enter the NBA Draft this offseason. That never came about as a result of his basketball performance.
The Australian had a difficult sophomore season with the Blue Devils, shining like a future NBA talent at moments while faltering at others. He finished the season on a down note, going scoreless in Duke’s Elite 8 loss to NC State on 0-for-9 shooting.
Due to injury, he was limited to only 32 games, of which he started 25. Proctor averaged 10.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game, shooting 42.3% from the field and 35.2% from three-point range, all of which increased from the previous season.
The Blue Devils have the top-ranked freshmen class entering Durham next season, but despite their talent, Duke still lacks a real point guard, which Proctor immediately fills.
Duke has already seen Mark Mitchell and Christian Reeves join the transfer portal, with more departures expected from the current squad.
Jon Scheyer hopes to keep at least one more guard from this year’s roster, either Roach, Caleb Foster, or Jared McCain.
