Gary O’Neil has been charged by the FA for his actions following the contentious VAR ruling that cost Wolves a point against West Ham.
Max Kilman’s late equaliser was called out for offside due to Tawanda Chirewa’s location in front of goalie Lukasz Fabianski.
The controversial decision enraged O’Neil and his Wolves players and staff, and it was heavily lambasted by analysts and supporters.
O’Neil has now been accused with acting in a ‘improper and/or threatening’ manner following the final whistle.
The FA issued the following statement: “Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following the Premier League encounter against West Ham United on Saturday, April 6, 2024.
“It is alleged that after the game, his language and/or attitude in or around the match officials’ changing rooms was inappropriate and/or intimidating.
“He has until Monday 15 April 2024 to respond to the charge.”
Speaking to the media following the loss, O’Neil admitted that referee Tony Harrington refused to engage with him because of the way he posed questions.
He stated, “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to control my emotions and feelings well enough to receive an explanation (from the referee).”
“I was in with the referee, but things did not go well. I haven’t received an explanation, but it’s meaningless because everyone I’ve spoken with, including David Moyes and Fabianski, can’t believe it was given for offside.
When asked about his post-game conversation with the referee, O’Neil replied, “I was in a fairly bad mood at the final whistle.”
“I went in and asked him a few questions. He didn’t like how they were asked, so he decided it was better if we didn’t discuss it.”
