Several players face suspension for the second leg if they receive a yellow card during tonight’s match between AC Milan and Roma.
The first leg of the tie will be played at San Siro at 21:00 CEST, and in addition to devising various tactical plans, Stefano Pioli and Daniele De Rossi must keep a watch on the players who may miss the return game in the capital next week.
According to UEFA article 52, before the group stage, players and team officials are suspended for the next competitive match after three cautions that did not result in a red card, as well as any consecutive odd-numbered caution.
After every two rounds of a UEFA club competition (i.e., UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and/or UEFA Europa Conference League) in which a player is registered on a club’s list and eligible to play, the number of yellow cards he receives that do not result in a repeated caution suspension is reduced by one.
Starting with the first group stage match, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions that did not result in a red card, as well as any consecutive odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
That implies there might be up to seven players in the squad who are on the verge of being suspended. Rafael Leao and Mike Maignan are the most dangerous players on the Rossoneri roster, followed by Davide Calabria and Yunus Musah.
Bryan Cristante and Leandro Paredes, De Rossi’s men, join Leonardo Spinazzola on the disciplinary tightrope.
