Former Newcastle United striker Louis Saha believes that Eddie Howe, the head coach, deserves more recognition for his efforts at St James’ Park this season. Despite the team’s struggle to replicate last season’s top-four finish, they are still in contention for another European campaign if they finish the season strongly.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including significant injuries to key players and the demands of Champions League football and domestic cup competitions, Howe has maintained the support of the Newcastle fans. The squad has been stretched to its limits, but there have still been notable victories against top teams like Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Paris St-Germain.
Although there have been some disappointing results, Howe’s performance hasn’t received the credit it deserves, according to Saha, who briefly played for Newcastle in 1999.
“I expected this season to be a challenge for Newcastle, but still, Eddie Howe has managed to do really well,” Saha said in an interview with Paddy Power. “They’re sort of in the center of the table, striving to get to the European spots, but it’s clearly a process.
“Howe does not get the recognition he deserves because the Premier League is a great challenge. It’s difficult for any manager to come out and boldly state what they’re going to do. Except for three of the four managers, no one can guarantee anything.
“Eddie Howe deserves credit for his excellent management this season. He has effectively united the team and provided encouragement to young players, fostering their confidence to perform. His accomplishments are commendable.”
Newcastle’s pursuit of European qualification continues this Saturday as they face high-flying Tottenham at St James’ Park. Seeking vengeance for a previous heavy defeat to Ange Postecoglou’s side earlier in the season, United are eager for a win. However, Saha expresses uncertainty about the outcome.
“The Newcastle versus Spurs match this weekend is difficult to predict,” he remarked. “Tottenham has been conceding goals they could avoid, and with Alexander Isak’s impressive form, it’s bound to be an exciting game. Nonetheless, I believe Tottenham will have the slight edge.”
