Huge blow as another 5-star Auburn man enters transfer portal

Aden Holloway, who had a rough freshman season as Auburn’s primary point guard, is poised to transfer, according to 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins.

He is the third Auburn guard to enter the transfer portal, after K.D. Johnson and Tre Donaldson. Tahaad Pettiford, another five-star guard and the top-rated point guard in the 2024 class, is expected to arrive at Auburn this summer.

Holloway, a former five-star high school recruit, was brought to Auburn mostly for his shooting ability.

He demonstrated that fast in a preseason intersquad scrimmage and during the first half of Auburn’s season, earning him the starting point guard spot. Holloway shot 36.6% on three-pointers and averaged 10.5 points in Auburn’s first 13 non-conference games of the season.

It was a 3-point shot that instantly drew the attention of opposing defenders, and he was recognized early in the season as one of the greatest freshman in the country. Holloway’s mother, Robin Raimey, told AL.com that her son taught himself how to shoot from YouTube videos in their Charlotte, North Carolina, dining room turned basketball court.

However, when it came to SEC play, Holloway struggled. His three-point percentage plummeted substantially. From the start of SEC play to the completion of the season, Holloway shot 29.6% from the field and 24.4% on threes. He averaged 5.5 points per game. He made no 3-pointers in nine of the season’s final 22 games.

Throughout the struggle, Holloway seemed obviously upset on the court. During an open locker room media availability during the SEC Tournament, Holloway told AL.com that he had never experienced a stretch like this in his life.

“Like I said, just keep praying, having faith in God, and staying in the gym,” Holloway said in the locker room after Auburn defeated South Carolina on March 15. “You cannot ever give up. “That is what it is.”

Holloway was frequently the first and last player in the gym during Auburn practices, shooting extra three-pointers in an attempt to overcome his slump. He kept shooting during Auburn’s games, hoping to break out of it.

Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl and Holloway’s teammates continued to express their faith in the freshman. He stated that he believed every shot Holloway fired was going in.

But the shots did not fall.

Holloway improved in other aspects of his game, particularly his passing and defense. This season, Holloway captained an Auburn squad with a great assist-to-turnover ratio.

Holloway was 0-5 from the field in his final game for Auburn versus Yale.

During his high school recruitment, Holloway considered Tennessee, Miami, and Wake Forest, which was closer to home.
