Former Italy international Cassano does not think AC Milan player Rafael Leao is worth the month demanded for his signing this summer. The attacker has been linked with a move to Manchester United as a potential replacement for Marcus Rashford, should the club release its academy graduate following a disappointing season.
There is never a shortage of stories about Manchester United and the transfer market. As a result, media outlets around the world will publish more pieces about MUFC. From irrelevant headlines to scoops shared on social media by reputable writers like Fabrizio Romano.
One of the biggest concerns this summer will be whether United should cash in on Marcus Rashford, who has failed to duplicate his success from previous season, when he scored 30 goals. He became the first Manchester United player to score 30 goals in all competitions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.
Almost a year later, Rashford is yet to score more than 10 goals this season.
PSG has been interested in Rashford for years and could consider signing him to replace Kylian Mbappe, who will join Real Madrid this summer. This would prompt United to seek for Rashford alternatives in the transfer market.
Nico Williams and Antonio Nusa both have excellent potential, but AC Milan’s Rafael Leao is also a highly regarded wide winger to keep an eye on. Unless you agree with Antonio Cassano, a former forward for Italy, Roma, and Real Madrid.
Cassano views Rashford highly and believes Leao is unfit to lace his boots, much alone sign for United to replace the England international.
Leao is a dynamic player, but he, like Rashford, has long goal droughts, and we should hunt for a talent with more consistency. For example, this season, the Milan star spent five months without scoring a single Serie A goal, from September to the end of February.
Cassano told Rai Sport: “I still believe (Leao ) not a top-level talent. Because, if I look at Rashford, as a winger last year, he scored 26 (sic, 30) goals in a fantastic league.”
The greatest issue I see with Leao is his £150 million release clause. That is a ridiculous transfer fee for a guy who has never scored more than 20 goals in a single season, let alone 30.
“Since the league in Italy is not good, the problem is that he thinks he is a phenomenon,” Cassano said in a statement. “He’s a skilled player with impressive physical strength.
“Now, is he worth 120, 130, or 140 million euros? What exactly are we talking about? “We’re talking about a regular player with physical strength.”
This is why United should be careful what they hope for. Rashford is a terrific player, and I’d rather see him at his best for United than sign an inconsistent star like Leao.
This season, Leao has made 27 Serie A appearances, scoring six goals and assisting nine times. In the Champions League, the Portuguese international scored once in five matches.
