Eddie Howe has cautioned that Newcastle United could face a ‘tough’ summer transfer season as they seek to strengthen their present playing options. Under current Profit and Sustainability Rules, the club will have to stretch a limited transfer budget unless they can dispose players.
Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes have been linked with a transfer away from the club this summer, but Howe has lately repeated his intention to maintain both players and develop his team around them. So, what does the summer window hold for Newcastle United’s drive to strengthen and compete for Champions League football again?
This season has demonstrated the need of bulking out the squad with quality signings who do not leave the first team understrength should injuries occur. According to Howe, it may be a ‘tough’ window to navigate: “It’s going to be a difficult summer.” Howe admitted.
“Not to say what positions we want to improve, because I would have my idea where I want to take the team, but there are a lot of unknown factors going into the summer so it’s going to be quite difficult to prepare for what’s going to happen.”
Newcastle have spent substantially in their first two summer transfer windows under new ownership, but the fear of points penalty for violations of PSR limitations means they, like many other top-flight teams, will be hesitant of spending too much this summer. However, reforms to the current structure may be adopted in June, limiting the types of activities they can conduct.
