Another report, another left-winger connected with a move to Newcastle United – the one position in which we are fully covered.
In terms of future-proofing our squad, Newcastle are reasonably set at right-back and left flank; yet, there appear to be transfer tales breaking every day about Newcastle looking at wingers who often play on the left side of the attack.
This is our second left-wing transfer speculation of the day, following claims of Newcastle’s interest in Federico Chiesa earlier.
Like Chiesa, this latest link involves a winger who can play either side of a front three, this time Crysencio Summerville, a 22-year-old Dutchman from Leeds United.
Some big names are looking at Summerville
Newcastle are among a number of clubs interested in signing the winger this summer following a successful season in the Championship.
Liverpool and AC Milan are among his admirers, with Summerville scoring 18 goals from wide positions this season.
Summerville has nine assists in 41 games for Leeds across all competitions, in addition to his 18 goals.
Leeds will definitely add on a ‘Newcastle Tax’ to any bid for Summerville
According to Football Transfers, Leeds will demand at least £45 million for Summerville if he leaves in the summer, but with automatic promotion to the Premier League still a possibility, they will hope to keep him next season if they get promoted.
Newcastle, meanwhile, is looking for flexible players who can cover a variety of roles, and Summerville fits the bill. Given Newcastle’s injury issues this season, their lack of squad depth was painfully obvious, and having players who can cover various roles makes perfect sense.
As we mentioned with Chiesa, if Eddie Howe can persuade Summerville that he will be most effective on the right side of the attack, this is a sensible move; nevertheless, we’d be surprised if Leeds would let us have him for £45 million. They’ll be out for retribution after signing Karl Darlow.
