It’s not worth considering where Newcastle United would be without Bruno Guimaraes.
The Brazilian is possibly Newcastle’s best player, which is no small feat given that they also have the outstanding Alexander Isak in their roster.
Eddie Howe’s side has not won a game without the 26-year-old since he joined St James’ Park for £40 million in January 2022, demonstrating his importance to the team.
Guimaraes, who may leave the club this summer, topped off a memorable day for him against Fulham on Saturday by scoring the winning goal at Craven Cottage in his 100th appearance for the club.
While Newcastle may have to adjust to life without Guimaraes in the long run, they are nearly free of one specific concern regarding his prospective absence.
The midfielder, who is currently on nine yellow cards, faces a two-game ban if another one is lifted and he avoids a booking in next week’s game against Tottenham.
Guimaraes has worked tirelessly to continue to shine for Newcastle without overstepping the mark, and the midfielder has now spoken with Howe behind closed doors about that exact balance.

Speaking to Premier League Productions following the win over Fulham, Guimaraes said: “It is difficult for me since I play for this club. I offer everything and am aggressive, so it’s difficult not to receive yellow cards. I enjoy playing football with enthusiasm, and I can be a touch too strong at times.
“I chatted with the manager, who advised me to play smarter. I’ve been doing it, and there’s only one more game to avoid.”

It will be nice to see the danger of a ban gone, assuming all goes well against Tottenham.
Guimaraes, at his best, is as aggressive as he is helpful on the ball, and that fighting spirit will be required in the run-in.
Other than Spurs, Manchester United, and Brighton, Newcastle will undoubtedly be expected to win their remaining games against Crystal Palace, Sheffield United, Burnley, and Brentford.
If they are to do so, releasing Guimaraes will be critical.
