42-goal ex-Sunderland striker suffers relegation following January transfer move

The former Sunderland striker has been relegated from the Championship to Rotherham United.
Charlie Wyke, a former Sunderland striker, has been relegated from the Championship with Rotherham United.

Wyke, who scored 42 goals in all competitions for the Black Cats from 2018 to 2021, joins the Millers on loan from Wigan Athletic during the winter transfer window.

Rotherham became the first team to be demoted from the Championship this season after Lea Richardson’s side fell 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle, with Wyke’s former Sunderland teammate Bali Mumba scoring.

Mumba’s first-half goal propels Rotherham United back into League One following two seasons in the second division, with Wyke certain to return to Wigan Athletic this summer. The 31-year-old’s contract, however, is set to end in June.

Wigan Athletic are presently 13th in League One, having collected 52 points from 42 games under Shaun Maloney. Sunderland continue to be connected with Latics goalkeeper Sam Tickle.
