Sunderland must choose a new permanent manager next season after dismissing Michael Beale in February, two months after his arrival at the Stadium of Light.
Prior to Beale’s arrival, the Black Cats considered other options, including IF Elfsborg manager Jimmy Thelin.
The Sunderland links are discussed in Friday’s issue of Göteborgs-Posten, as is the Swedish club’s attitude on allowing the coach leave.
Aftonbladet reported in December that the 46-year-old spoke with the board of the English club, after also being linked with Swansea City.
A month later, the Swede signed a new contract with Elfsborg through 2026. According to recent reports in Scotland, Aberdeen are considering appointing him as manager.
According to GP, Thelin has informed his club that he is not interested in leaving Elfsborg right now.
Meanwhile, Elfsborg director Stefan Andreasson has stated that the manager is still attracting interest from other parties.
“There is interest and options for him, but we have determined through our discussions that he should stay with Elfsborg. Then we’ll see what the future holds, and we’re delighted that he’s a sought-after name,” he told GP.
Despite signing a new contract, the director has left the door open for interested clubs to lure Thelin away from Elfsborg.
“In the best-case scenario, you buy out the coach, just as you would with players. However, when the best alternative for Jimmy becomes available, we will find a solution,” Andreasson stated.
Andreasson’s statements could be encouraging for Sunderland, as long as they intend to return for Thelin in the summer.
