Sunderland have stated that chief operating officer Steve Davison will step down at the end of the season.
The decision follows months of significant public outcry ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby in January. Sunderland fans were outraged when the Black Cats bar, a premium suite within the Stadium of Light, was decked out in Newcastle United colours.
The Toon fans were given a huge 6,000-strong capacity for the derby, and while Sunderland lost 3-0, the biggest calamity for them occurred off the pitch. An humiliating club statement did a U-turn, but the damage had already been done, causing discord among Black Cats fans and the board.
Sunderland will split ways with Davison, who was appointed during the Covid-19 pandemic, this summer. The lifelong fan has been in charge of managing business and non-football-related affairs.
When confirming Davison’s resignation, owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus praised him for his efforts. A statement read: “On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, I’d like to thank Steve for his commitment and effort over the last three years.
“Integrity and professionalism have been at the forefront of his leadership, and while we have all encountered obstacles along the way, his contribution ensures that he leaves the Club equipped to move forward. Steve and his family will always be welcome at the Stadium of Light, and we wish him the best in the next phase of his career.
Davison, known for bringing England women and the women’s Rugby World Cup to Wearside, joined the club with the goal of returning SAFC to the Premier League.
I’m glad to leave the club in a much stronger situation than when I first came. I’d want to thank the club personnel for their support and I wish them continued success, and I look forward to returning as a fan of SAFC beginning next season.”
