Breaking: Huge $120M Miami Heat Star Could be Set for Departure

If the Miami Heat fail to win a championship, major adjustments may be necessary. They’ve had lengthy playoff runs, but they’ve yet to win the championship. One way they could improve is to trade Tyler Herro.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report discussed why trading Herro could benefit the Heat.

“Miami should abandon the idea of Herro becoming a star and instead use him to help cover up other areas of need. Perhaps he lays the way for the kind of size the Heat have lacked around (and behind) Bam Adebayo. Perhaps Herro assists in delivering a lockdown defender with a consistent outside shooting, or someone who’d better match with Terry Rozier than Herro.”

Buckley wrote in an April 4 article.

Buckley did not specify who the Heat should obtain in exchange for Herro. They might find it difficult to deal him because he is in the first year of a four-year, $120 million contract.

Herro has played 36 games in the 2023-24 season. He has averaged 20.8 points per game over that period. He has averaged 20 points per game for three straight seasons, dating back to the 2021-22 season.

Despite Herro’s talent, he remains unavailable for the Heat. According to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel, Herro will miss the Heat’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

“Tyler Herro was out again for the Heat on Thursday night due to medial tendinitis in his right foot.”

“Thursday will be Herro’s 20th consecutive game missed, having last played in the Feb. 23 road win over the New Orleans Pelicans,” Winderman wrote in an April 3 piece.

Herro has a history of injury issues. He missed the majority of the Heat’s Cinderella playoff run in 2023 and struggled to remain on the court in 2022.

Herro’s absence could affect the Heat’s position in the Eastern Conference standings. They now have a 42-33 record, making them the conference’s sixth seed. As the eighth seed, the Sixers trail them by a game and a half. Winning this game could give the Heat an advantage in the play-in race.

If they lose, it might mean missing the playoffs altogether.

Pat Riley Denies Trying to Trade Tyler Herro

Though Herro was heavily discussed in trade talks for Damian Lillard during the 2023 NBA offseason, Pat Riley stated that he did not aggressively seek to move Herro.

“I will say this, that we never offered Tyler in any trade, and we’ve never shopped him to anybody,” Riley said, according to Winderman. “It’s just part of the business.”

Things could change during the 2024 NBA offseason. Herro has demonstrated his scoring ability from the start. However, throughout the last few seasons, he has demonstrated an inability to stay on the court. The Heat may trade him for someone who not only benefits them more, but is also durable enough to last both the regular season and the playoffs.
