‘I don’t get it’ – Sean Dyche left baffled by something that happened to Everton against Newcastle

Everton and Newcastle drew 1-1, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin converting a last-gasp penalty.
Sean Dyche was perplexed as to why Everton received a penalty so late in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle United.

The Toffees earned a point at St James’ Park when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in the 88th minute to cancel out Alexander Isak’s 15th-minute opening. Ashley Young won the penalty for the visitors after being brought down by Magpies substitute Paul Dummett.

VAR intervened and investigated the situation for many minutes before assigning on-field referee Tony Harrington to the pitchside monitor. He also took some time to assess the foul before issuing Everton’s second penalty of the season.

And, after been denied a penalty in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth, Dyche is beginning to question what it takes for his team to be given the opportunity to strike from 12 yards. The Everton manager told TNT Sport: “I’m very happy for Dom. He has been working hard. We’ve been experimenting with different striker combinations to keep things interesting. He came on, influenced the game, and I’m glad he scored that goal.

“I’m not sure what you need to do to obtain a penalty because we can’t get them. We had one on Saturday, which I don’t understand, and another tonight. I’m not sure why they had to look at it 300 times. It is strange. You’re looking at that; the lads have seen it, but we’re not getting involved because you’re not supposed to, but the pen must be delivered. I don’t see why it takes so long to give it.

“The striker is quite firm, so you always have a chance. The keeper is going the right way, but you need something to go your way. Tonight, we earned our right. Jimmy [Garner] finished with great composure, hitting the inside of the post. We’re on the type of run where it smacks someone in the back and goes in, but then it probably doesn’t and you’re left wondering.”
