Marcos Alonso, a former Sunderland loanee, is likely to leave La Liga giants Barcelona at the end of the current season.
Alonso spent only half a season on loan from Fiorentina at the Stadium of Light in 2014, guiding the club to the Capital One Cup final against Manchester City and avoiding Premier League relegation under Gus Poyet.
After leaving Sunderland, the left-back made 212 appearances for Chelsea over six years, winning the Champions League, Europa League, and Premier League titles.
However, Alonso has only played four games in La Liga this season and is expected to leave the Camp Nou this summer. According to various publications, the footballer has agreed to join Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone.
According to Spanish source Cadena SER, the arrangement is not final and may change depending on new offers and prospects. They do, however, say that the terms of the contract have been agreed upon in general.
Sunderland, Alonso’s former club, face Bristol City in the Championship on Saturday at the Stadium of Light, with interim head coach Mike Dodds and his players under pressure to provide an acceptable performance following the disaster against Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday.
