Following Newcastle United’s remarkable victory on Saturday, Chris Sutton has made an unexpected prediction for the Magpies’ match against Everton.
Newcastle United returns to action at home just days after their amazing triumph over West Ham United.
St James’ Park was rocking following Harvey Barnes’ incredible comeback, and tonight’s game against Everton could be even more electrifying.
The Magpies, who were defeated 3-0 in the reverse meeting in December, will also be looking for payback. On that night, Kieran Trippier made a couple of huge mistakes, and Anthony Gordon was derided upon his return to Merseyside.
The 23-year-old will miss tonight’s game owing to suspension, and Eddie Howe is also dealing with new injuries. Jamaal Lascelles, Tino Livramento, and Miguel Almiron are all expected to miss out, as are Nick Pope, Joelinton, Callum Wilson, and Sven Botman.
Newcastle’s roster is stretched beyond belief, which is why BBC Sport commentator Chris Sutton has made an unexpected prediction for Thursday evening’s game against Everton.
Chris Sutton predicts the score of Newcastle vs Everton
Sutton predicted the scores for all midweek Premier League games for BBC Sport.
He does not anticipate Newcastle to win back-to-back games and has predicted a 2-1 victory for Everton.
“I was at St James’ Park to see Newcastle’s late comeback to beat West Ham 4-3 and there is a lot to admire about Eddie Howe’s side,” he said on his blog.
“They found a way to win the game, and it was fantastic for Harvey Barnes to come in and change the game the way he did after missing so much of the season.
“My fear for them here is how much it will have stolen from them. Their roster was already injured, and their captain Jamaal Lascelles is sidelined for several months too.
“I’m taking a chance here, especially given Everton’s 12-game winless streak, but I believe Newcastle will be so stretched and put in so much effort on Saturday that it will come up with them here.
“Everton’s big problem is still in attack because they really struggle to find the back of the net but they do create chances and I have a sneaking feeling they will get a result, just like they did when they beat the Magpies 3-0 at Goodison Park in December.”
Paul Merson does not agree with Sutton’s Newcastle prediction
Paul Merson has also predicted the midweek Premier League fixtures, and he disagrees with what Sutton has chosen.
The former Arsenal forward believes Newcastle will defeat Everton on Tuesday night, predicting a 3-1 victory for Eddie Howe’s side.
He said in a tweet: “I’m backing Newcastle to secure a comfortable victory this week.”
Newcastle would love a more straightforward win
In a perfect world, we beat Everton with ease tonight. But nothing is ever straightforward when it comes to Newcastle United.
The win over West Ham was a real whirlwind, and there were casualties along the way. In turn, that has made the Everton game even tougher.
But Howe will have confidence in the players that he has available, while confidence is not something you would associate with Everton right now. They are 12 games without a win, and that will hopefully extend to 13 tonight.
