This season has been a write-off for Newcastle United and their supporters, which is sad given where the team was at the start of the season.
There have been some highlights, of course. As recently as this weekend, the Magpies first team gave some tremendous entertainment in their match against West Ham United, winning 4-3 after falling down 3-1 with 13 minutes remaining.
The atmosphere in that game will be comparable to that produced by the St. James’ Park crowd during Newcastle’s thrilling Champions League victory against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season.
That was clearly the high point, as injuries followed quickly, eventually knocking the club out of Europe entirely.
It’s a scenario that hasn’t improved, with Jamaal Lascelles being ruled out for up to nine months and Miggy Almiron also missing against West Ham, adding to the club’s injury list.
If any members of the Toon Army are looking for good news, they may have to wait a bit.
Bruno Guimaraes may be sacrificed by Newcastle
“It’s also possible that Newcastle will sell one of their big stars this summer,” Fabrizio Romano told CaughtOffside during his Daily Briefing.
“there will rely on the final ruling on Financial Fair Play, but there is a possibility, according to what I’ve been told.
“Newcastle would want to maintain all of their stars, but some of them, such as Bruno Guimaraes, have release clauses, so it will be time to follow those in the summer.
“I’m sure they want to add also some players to their squad in different positions, so it’s not only about the outgoings.”
Guimaraes has previously been regarded as a player who may have to be sacrificed, although this might be damaging to Eddie Howe and his team’s goals.
The Brazilian is his team’s fulcrum, the one who never stops running from start to finish.
However, given the nature of FFP, Newcastle may have to swallow the agreement and get the most out of it in order to appease the fans.
From Howe’s perspective, if Guimaraes leaves, he’ll have to think long and hard about who replaces him, because the Brazilian is undoubtedly his most significant player to date.
