The Kansas City Chiefs are lacking at quarterback—not at QB1, of course, where two-time NFL MVP Patrick
Mahomes is penciled in on the depth chart before OTAs this spring. However, their QB2 and QB3 choices are awful.
An NFL insider reportedly listed the Chiefs as a top destination for a former No. 2 overall pick’s rehabilitation.
The Kansas City Chiefs need a backup for Patrick Mahomes
Chris Oladokun and Ian Book are the Chiefs’ backup quarterbacks behind Mahomes. Blaine Gabbert, a former Jackson Jaguars starter, took over for long-time backup Chad Henne as the Chiefs’ second quarterback last year. Henne announced his retirement following the Super Bowl for the 2022 season. Gabbert is now a free agent.
Zach Wilson was named a top fit for the Chiefs
The Chiefs appear to be ready to take a new approach at quarterback 2. Bucky Brooks of NFL.com recently discussed the possible trade scenarios for New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. Brooks believes Wilson would be a fantastic fit as Mahomes’ backup for the upcoming season:
“The best quarterback whisperer in the game could use another project to work on in Kansas City after Patrick Mahomes. Yes, the two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion is firmly established as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.
However, as we’ve seen throughout Andy Reid’s storied career, the existence of a blue-chip quarterback does not preclude the future Hall of Fame coach from taking on a reclamation project who may develop into a desirable trade commodity down the road.
Reid rebuilt Michael Vick into a Pro Bowler in Philadelphia after he left the game to serve a jail sentence for dogfighting. Reid also helped A.J. Feeley and Kevin Kolb become potential starters (and, in Kolb’s case, tradeable assets).
As Mahomes’ understudy in a championship setting, Wilson could sit back and learn how to play the position at a high level from a coach and quarterback who have broken the code, all while polishing his skills on the practice field.”
The New York Jets haven’t helped themselves in trade negotiations
The Jets are desperate to trade Wilson this offseason. It didn’t help Jets general manager Joe Douglas when owner Woody Johnson stated Wilson didn’t perform well enough to be labeled a backup last season.
Wilson is owed more than $5 million for his services next season. The Chiefs, who are tight on cash, are unlikely to pay his full asking price. For the Chiefs to consider a trade, the Jets would have to either increase their draft compensation or eat some of Wilson’s money. deal ideas and rumors have circulated around a potential Wilson deal to Kansas City.
If Mahomes is injured during the 2024 season, Wilson will have a greater chance of succeeding in Kansas City than in New York. The Chiefs have a superior offensive line than Wilson ever had with the Jets. The Chiefs signed Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, a talented wide receiver, to combine alongside tight end Travis Kelce. They are likely to include an electrifying receiver in this year’s selection.
