Breaking news: Rams complete another important signing of ‘veteran’ wideout

The Rams have already re-signed Demarcus Robinson this summer, and they will continue their receiver-retention efforts weeks later. They have returned to Tyler Johnson, re-signing the veteran wideout on Sunday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2.

The Rams plan to return their top receivers from last season. The Rams have Puka Nacua, Robinson, and Tutu Atwell under contract, with Cooper Kupp returning for an eighth season. Johnson spent the majority of the 2023 season on the Rams’ practice squad, but the organization will test how the former fifth-round pick performs in his second year under Sean McVay’s playbook.

Johnson, 25, signed with the Rams midway through last season; the Raiders released him shortly after. Johnson appeared in one Rams game last season, but he joins Ben Skowronek in rounding out a receiving corps that should look quite similar to the 2023 iteration. While it would not be surprising to see the team add a draft pick to compete for a job, this position group remains stable for the time being.

Johnson, most renowned for his early-career work with the Buccaneers, will be drafted by Tampa Bay in 2020 with former Golden Gophers colleague Antoine Winfield Jr. The 6-foot-1 wideout grabbed two touchdown passes as a rookie in a season that won him a Super Bowl ring, and he had a career-high 360 receiving yards the following year during a somewhat memorable season for Bucs receivers, thanks in large part to Antonio Brown’s emergence.

Johnson played two Texans games in 2022 and caught two catches for the Rams last season, scoring a touchdown against the 49ers in Week 18 as both teams rested several regulars. He will compete for a backup spot again this year.
