AC Milan’s backup plan for acquiring a goalkeeper is now focused on Giorgi Mamardashvili, amid challenges in renegotiating Mike Maignan’s contract. Mamardashvili, who recently played a crucial role in Georgia’s qualification for the Euros, has emerged as a potential option.
Maignan’s current contract extends until 2026, and negotiations for its extension have commenced to prevent a situation similar to Gigio Donnarumma’s departure. However, initial demands from Maignan are deemed excessive, prompting AC Milan to prepare for possible alternatives.
According to reports from Tuttosport, relayed by MilanNews, Mamardashvili is now on AC Milan’s radar. His recent standout performance, including a crucial save in the shootout against Greece, has garnered attention. Alongside Michele Di Gregorio of Monza, Mamardashvili is being considered for the post-Maignan era.
Should Maignan be sold, AC Milan anticipates receiving approximately €80m, with around €40m earmarked for securing Mamardashvili’s services. Leveraging their positive relationship with Valencia, established through Yunus
Musah’s signing, AC Milan might negotiate a lower transfer fee, especially considering Valencia’s financial needs. Nonetheless, the primary focus remains on renewing Maignan’s contract on terms similar to Rafael Leao’s.
